#OctTBR2022 Day 10: “Shepherding a Child’s Heart” by Tedd Tripp

[What is #OctTBR2022? I explain it here.]

What It Is: A parenting book by a notable Christian counselor/author.

Why I’m Reading It: I’m a dad of 3 girls who wants to be a better dad. I have heard mixed reviews about Tripp’s approach, but I’m interested in seeing what he has to say.

Have you read this book? Would you recommend it, or are there other resources for parents that you think I should check out instead? Let me know in the comments.

  1. I’d be curious to know what the mixed reviews say and what you think once you’ve read it.

I have not read this yet, but Jamie and I did attend a parenting conference the suthor of this book read at our church. It was really good. I like how he brings the three circle method of evangelism into parenting.

I also met a guy at church over the Summer who is the father of 7 boys between the ages of 17 and 4. He introduced me to this material we’re currently going through. I’m only through chapter 2, so I’m not that far into it. It’s pretty good and very centered on scripture, but sometimes can feel a little repetitive. When it comes to spanking, he’s very firm on that being the proper way to discipline small children and discouragesthe use of some of the alternatives. Not sure how I feel about that, but that could be evident of some worldly thinking being addressed by the material. Anyway, it’s worth checking out and I’d be curious to hear your thoughts if you do. Bonus: It’s free! You’ll need a printer and lots of paper, though.

      1. I figured since I recommended Full Circle Parenting it would be a good idea to go beyond the conference we attended and start reading the actual book. I finished chapter 2 last night. I really like the way he keeps the conversations gospel centered using the three circles. One of his gripes about many other parenting resources is that they tend to focus on behavior modification and not so much in forming your children into faithful Christ followers. I can see that in the family discipleship workbook. While I would agree that good behavior is *A*desired outcome, I would like to see it more rooted in the gospel. Not that the principles aren’t there, just not as prevalent.
